TOM STRYKER’S FREE FOOTBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD
#340 TENNESSEE (-23′) over UTSA at 4 PM EST
Checking in hungry off last Saturday’s 29-16 road loss to the Gators, the Volunteers will step out of SEC play and annihilate the visiting Roadrunners. UTSA makes the trek to Knoxville off a 37-29 home loss to Army and things will go from bad to worse at this venue for head coach Jeff Traylor and his boys.
Under the direction of head coach Josh Heupel, Tennessee has been an absolute force inside Neyland Stadium posting a 13-3 SU record and has quietly ripped off 10 straight wins (6-2 ATS) by an average of 32.2 points per game. Equally impressive, as a non-conference host holding a team won/loss percentage of .500 or better, the Volunteers hold a lucrative 30-1-1 SU and 18-10 ATS mark provided their opponent arrives without steam off a straight up loss. In this run comfortably priced as a favorite between -10 points and -30 points, the Vols improve to a rewarding 16-4 ATS.
Statistically speaking, this is a nightmare matchup for UTSA. Offensively, the Roadrunners are ranked 105th in the FBS in scoring (21.0 ppg) and 73rd in total offense (383.0 ypg). That unit will have trouble trading punches with a high-octane Vols attack that is averaging 31.7 points and 447.3 total yards per game. To make matters worse, UTSA has never beaten a ranked foe posting a disturbing 0-12 SU record. On a technical note, when coming off a straight up loss priced as a favorite, the Roadrunners hold a stiff 2-10-1 ATS record including a nasty 0-6-1 ATS if they hold a team won/loss percentage of .400 or less.
With Coach Heupel leading the way the Vols have inked a 10-2 SU non-conference record and outscored their opponents 564-216. Here comes another beating. Take Tennessee. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
