TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, JULY 6TH
#909 ARIZONA with Pfaadt (+106) over San Diego with Waldron at 9:40 PM EST
The Diamondbacks slipped last night in their effort against the Padres and will get back on track with a solid showing in this right-back rematch. Arizona sits 10.5-games back in the division and 3.5-games behind in its hunt for an NL Wild Card spot and manager Torey Lovullo and his boys need crank things up a notch if they plan on making a return trip to the World Series.
Young righty Brandon Pfaadt will hit the hump for the visitors. Checking in with 17 starts under his belt, No. 32 was nipped for 49 earned runs and 95 hits in 103.0 innings of work. Brandon fanned 94 and issued 26 free passes on his way to a 3-6 tally with a 4.28 ERA. Even better, in his last four June performances versus the A’s, Twins, Nats, and Halos, Pfaadt was poked for only nine earned runs and 21 hits in 24.2 frames. That adds up to a 1-1 record with a strong 3.28 ERA.
Taking the hill for the home squad will be right-hander Matt Waldron. So far this year, No. 61 has made 17 starts and been tapped for 37 earned runs and 83 hits in 93.2 innings. Matt struck out 87 and walked 28 on his way to a 5-7 mark with a 3.56 ERA. Surprisingly, in his own backyard, Waldron has been whacked for 18 earned runs and 38 hits in 39.0 frames. That shakes down to a 2-4 tally with a 4.15 ERA.
A few reliable team trends back this investment. Arizona has posted a profitable 25-19 record in its last 44 when coming off a loss and 17 of its last 31 against division foes.
The defending NL Champions are looking up at the Giants, Padres, and Dodgers in the NL West and they need to pick up some wins before the All-Star break in order to gain some ground in the division. Take Arizona with Pfaadt. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
