TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH
#968 LA ANGELS RUN-LINE with Ohtani (-1′ -120) over Oakland with Irvin at 9:38 PM EST
Off last night’s 4-1 win over the Athletics, the Angels will have no trouble extending the margin in this division battle. Los Angeles has its best arm on the bump and the Halos will have no trouble extending the margin in this contest.
Hitting the hill for the home team will be right-hander Shohei Ohtani. With 26 starts in the books this season, No. 17 has pitched extremely well surrendering only 42 earned runs and 121 hits in 153.0 innings of work. Ohtani struck out 203 and walked 42 on his way to a solid 14-8 mark with a strong 2.47 ERA. Shane’s last five starts have been dominant too. With 32.0 frames completed, Ohtani was nipped for only four earned runs and 20 hits. That’s good enough for a 4-0 record with an elite 1.13 ERA.
Southpaw Cole Irvin will counter for the visitors. So far this year, No. 19 has made 28 starts for Oakland and been punished for 77 earned runs and 161 hits in 171.0 innings. Irvin fanned 117 and issued 35 free passes on his way to a 9-12 record with a feeble 4.05 ERA. Cole’s efforts on foreign soil haven’t been that great either. As a guest, Irvin has been clocked for 41 earned runs and 79 hits in 71.1 frames. That shakes down to a 4-7 mark with a 5.17 ERA.
Several strong team trends support this investment. Oakland has dropped 35 of its last 52 on foreign soil, 22 of its last 32 when coming off a loss, and 36 of its last 53 overall. On the other side of the field, Los Angeles has won five of its last seven when facing a left-handed starter.
The Halos have the better arm on the bump and that will be the difference in this wager. Take Los Angeles on the run-line with Ohtani. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
