#973 CLEVELAND with Bieber (-116) over Seattle with Gilbert at 10:10 PM EST
Checking in off yesterday’s 3-1 road loss to the M’s, the Guardians will bounce back nicely in this classic pitchers duel between two of the best arms in the American League. Cleveland is clinging to a 4.0-game lead over Minnesota and Chicago in the AL Central standings and manager Terry Francona’s kids need this dub to hold on to its slim advantage.
Solid right-hander Shane Bieber will take the mound for the visitors. So far this year, No. 57 has made 23 starts and been touched for only 50 earned runs and 128 hits in 145.0 innings. Bieber fanned 144 and walked 32 on his way to an 8-7 record with a 3.10 ERA. Shane’s last five outings have been impressive as well. Facing the ChiSox, Blue Jays, Tigers, Diamondbacks, and Rays, Bieber was nicked for only six earned runs and 26 hits in 33.1 innings of work. That’s good enough for a 4-1 record and a powerful 1.62 ERA.
Young righty Logan Gilbert will hit the hump for the home team. In 2022, No. 36 has made 25 starts for the M’s and been slapped for 56 earned runs and 137 hits in 143.1 innings of work. Gilbert struck out 131 and walked 41 on his way to a 10-5 tally with a 3.52 ERA. It looks like Logan may be hitting the wall right now. In four August outings, Gilbert has been gashed for 18 earned runs and 28 hits in 20.1 frames. That’s bad enough for an 0-1 mark with an elevated 7.97 ERA.
Several lucrative team trends support this investment. Cleveland has cashed six of its last seven after scoring two runs or less in its last game, eight of its last 10 coming off a loss, 12 of its last 17 overall, and 10 of its last 14 as a guest facing a foe that owns a team won/loss percentage greater than .500. On the other side of T-Mobile Park, Seattle has dropped eight of its last nine in August with Gilbert holding the pearl.
The Guardians have the better arm on the bump and that will prove to be the difference in this American League battle. Take Cleveland with Bieber. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
