TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JULY 24TH
#917 NY YANKEES with Cortes (-184) over Baltimore with Kremer at 1:35 PM EST
Off yesterday’s loss to the O’s and on a weak 4-6 run in their last 10 games, the Bronx Bombers will rally the troops and respond with a solid victory here. New York’s advantage in the AL East still rests at 12.0-games over Tampa Bay and 12.5-games over Toronto and the Pinstripes will keep those margins with a dub in this spot.
Southpaw Nestor Cortes Jr. will grab the pearl for the visitors. With 17 starts in the books this year, No. 65 has been in a zone surrendering only 28 earned runs and 74 hits in 95.2 innings of work. Cortes struck out 99 and walked 22 on his way to a 7-3 mark with a reliable 2.63 ERA. Nestor has been at his best in day starts too. With the sun shining, Cortes has been nicked for only nine earned runs and 24 hits in 43.2 frames. After the math, that equates to a solid 3-0 mark with an elite 1.85 ERA.
Young righty Dean Kremer will counter for the home team. In three July starts against the Devil Rays, Halos, and Rangers, No. 64 was punched for eight earned runs and 18 hits in 13.2 innings. Kremer fanned 13 and issued five free passes on his way to a 1-0 record with a weak 5.27 ERA. Dean’s last three starts against the Yankees haven’t gone that well either. With 12.1 frames completed, Kremer was cranked for 11 earned runs and 20 hits. That’s bad enough for an 0-2 tally and a feeble 8.03 ERA.
Plenty of powerful team trends support this investment. New York has won 40 of its last 57 when facing a right-handed starter, 31 of its last 47 against division foes, 20 of its last 31 in day games, and 36 of its last 51 when playing on the road in this series. On the other side of the park, Baltimore has slipped in 76 of its last 108 against AL East opponents and 63 of its last 78 when facing a foe that owns a team won/loss percentage greater than .600.
With a day off tomorrow, the Bronx Bombers will give the Orioles the attention they deserve and that will be more than enough to propel them to this victory. Take New York with Cortes Jr. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
