TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25TH
#912 ATLANTA with Wright (-155) over Boston with Mazza at 7:10 PM EST
Checking in off Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the Marlins, the Braves will grab an easy victory over the BoSox tonight. Atlanta’s high-octane offense is averaging 5.91 runs per game (ranked No. 1 in MLB) this season and they will smash a Boston pitching unit that owns an ugly 5.77 ERA (ranked dead last in MLB) this year.
Young righty Kyle Wright will toe the rubber for the home team. In his last two performances against the Mets and Nationals, No. 30 pitched outstanding allowing only three earned runs and nine hits in 12.1 innings of work. Wright fanned 10 and walked three en route to a 2-0 tally with a solid 2.19 ERA. Kyle enjoyed a little success against the Red Sox in his Major League debut too. Back on September 4th, 2018, Wright faced the BoSox in a relief role and allowed no earned runs and no hits in 2.0 frames.
Hitting the hill for Boston will be reliever turned starter Chris Mazza. In his last performance on September 19th at home against the Bronx Bombers, No. 22 was hammered for two earned runs and five hits in 4.0 innings. Mazza only fanned one batter and issued three free passes on his way to the ugly 8-0 loss. Overall, Chris has been zapped for 15 earned runs and 30 hits in just 25.0 frames. That’s bad enough for a 1-2 tally with a weak 5.40 ERA.
Technically speaking, this is a solid spot for the home team. Atlanta has quietly won 10 of its last 11 at home against AL foes that throw a right-handed starter, five straight coming off a loss, 48 of its last 67 when favored in its own backyard and 28 of its last 38 after scoring two runs or less. On the other side of the white chalk line, Boston has dropped 36 of its last 51 as an underdog and 41 of its last 58 fighting a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .500.
With the No. 2 seed in the National League up for grabs, the Braves need wins to keep their advantage over the Cubs. Take Atlanta with Wright. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
