TOM STRYKER’S FREE SELECTION SATURDAY, AUGUST 1ST
#951 CINCINNATI with Bauer (-1.5 run line -122) over Detroit with Fulmer at 1:10 PM EST
In a nasty mood off last night’s 7-2 road loss to the Tigers, the Big Red Machine will come to play on Saturday afternoon. Cincy is already peeking up at St. Louis, Milwaukee and Chicago in the NL Central after just seven games and the Reds need to start making a move.
Back on the hill for Cincinnati will be emotional right-hander Trevor Bauer. To say No. 27 wants this victory would be an understatement. On July 26th, Bauer got the start at home against Detroit and was scratched for only one earned run and two hits in 6.1 innings of work. Trevor fanned 13 and walked only one batter but failed to earn a decision in the Reds 3-2 loss to the Motor City Kitty’s. Bauer gave the Big Red Machine a quality start in that blemish and he will be itching to do the same here in this payback situation.
Right-hander Michael Fulmer will counter for Detroit. In his first outing of the year back on July 27th at home against the Royals, No. 32 was blitzed for four earned runs and five hits in just 2.2 frames. Michael walked one, fanned two and served up three gopher balls in Detroit 14-6 loss to Kansas City. Last year, Fulmer made 24 starts for the Motor City Kitty’s and was blasted for 69 earned runs and 128 hits in 132.1 innings of work. Michael walked 46 and whiffed 110 on his way to a disturbing 3-12 tally and an elevated 4.69 ERA.
It is noted that Detroit has quietly won six of its last seven in this series at home. However, the Tigers have dropped 36 of their last 53 when matched up against a left-handed starter, 57 of their last 79 after allowing two runs or less in their previous contest and 51 of their last 71 in the second game of a series.
The Reds laid an egg in the first game of this series last night. Rest assured, manager David Bell’s boys will come out swinging on Saturday afternoon. Take Cincinnati with Bauer on the run line (-1.5 -122). Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
