TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH

#630 VCU (+) over Dayton at 8:30 PM EST
It’s gut-check time for VCU. Off back-to-back SU and ATS losses to George Mason and Richmond, the Rams will step up in a massive way under the Tuesday night lights and knock off the fifth-ranked Flyers. Dayton heads over to the Siegel Center off 14 consecutive straight up victories (6-6 ATS) and this is going to be a tremendous challenge for UD head coach Anthony Grant and his men. Let’s take a look inside the numbers.

Back on January 14th, VCU (+8.5) visited Dayton and dropped a 79-65 decision to the Flyers. Even with that blemish, the Rams still own a respectable 8-5 SU and 8-4-1 ATS record in their last 13 in this series. Equally impressive, at home hitting the hardwood off two or more straight up losses, VCU carries a remarkable 32-1 SU and 19-6-1 ATS mark including a juicy 21-0 SU and 16-4-1 ATS in this set provided they are fighting a conference foe. In addition, when running the floor with same season single revenge, the Rams carry a reliable 35-13 SU and 29-19 ATS mark including a money-making 29-7 SU and 25-11 ATS in this set if they hold a team won/loss percentage of .760 or less.

Dayton is obviously a solid basketball team. However, this is a spot where the Flyers could fall. When priced as a favorite and hitting the hardwood off a blowout win of eight points or more, UD has been at its financial worst posting a stiff 69-94-2 ATS mark. In this setting facing a foe that arrives off a straight up loss, Coach Grant’s kids fall to a woeful 17-32 ATS including a feeble 5-22 ATS in this set provided they arrive with confidence off two or more straight up wins. With those three parameters in play and Dayton running against an opponent that checks in off back-to-back SU and ATS losses, this team trend crashes to a disturbing 0-10 ATS.

The Flyers are going to be the highest-ranked team to ever visit the Siegel Center. In a serious payback mode, Rams skipper Mike Rhoades will have his kids ready to play. Take VCU. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
