TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, MARCH 23RD
#866 IOWA ST (-5′) over Mississippi at 7:45 PM EST
With plenty of steam off a decisive 82-55 win and cover over David Lipscomb, Iowa State will have no trouble drilling this overachieving Mississippi squad and advancing to the Sweet 16. The Rebels (+1.5) upset the Tar Heels in their First Round matchup and they’ll have trouble running the floor against this tough Cyclones squad.
In case you haven’t been paying attention, ISU has been one of college basketball’s elite programs lately notching a strong 54-17 SU and 46-24 ATS record in its last 71 games. Provided the Cyclones hit the floor off a SU and ATS win, this team trend explodes to a magnificent 33-8 SU and 29-12 ATS. Also, since 2007, No. 3 seeds in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament hold a reliable 14-7 ATS record provided they hit the hardwood off a pointspread win and are currently battling a foe that carries the No. 6 seed. Iowa State fits that fast-developing angle perfectly.
Technically speaking, this is a poor wagering spot for the Rebels. Since 1991, NCAA Tournament Round 2 underdogs have struggled notching a woeful 54-196 SU and 104-145-1 ATS record provided they won straight up priced as pup or pick in their last game. If our “play against” side is grabbing +5.5 or more and holds a seed of No. 9 or lower, this angle falls to a rough 9-69 SU and 29-49 ATS. That spells trouble for Mississippi.
The Rebels closed on a mediocre 8-9 SU and 5-11-1 ATS run in their last 17 games and, off a solid showing over UNC, head coach Chris Beard and his boys will get bombed here. Take Iowa State. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
