TOM STRYKER’S FREE FOOTBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, AUGUST 9TH
#107 HOUSTON (-2′) over Pittsburgh at 7 PM EST
With the advantage of having some extra reps under their belt thanks to last Thursday’s NFL Hall of Fame contest against the Bears, the Texans will stroll into the Steel City and knock off head coach Mike Tomlin’s Steelers. Pittsburgh plans on resting a number of key defensive starters and that will allow Houston’s offense to thrive inside Acrisure Stadium.
Technically speaking, this is a solid wagering spot for the visitors. Since 1983, game two teams priced competitively between -4.5 and +2 points hold a profitable 46-29-3 ATS record provided they are facing a foe that is playing in their preseason opener. Equally impressive, since 2011, the Texans own a reliable 29-16 SU and 28-15-2 ATS mark in their last 45 preseason battles including a nearly perfect 8-1 SU and ATS provided they check in off a straight up loss.
Pitt’s 18-4 SU and 15-6-1 ATS preseason run is certainly noted and respected. However, with quarterback Russell Wilson on the bench for this contest, the Steelers will rely on backups Justin Fields, Kyle Allen, and John Rhys Plumlee for points offensively. Matched up against a Houston quarterback rotation of C.J. Stroud, David Mills, Case Keenum, and Tim Boyle, that’s just not going to be enough to get the job done. Also, in the role of a preseason home dog, the Men of Steel have been a below average proposition inking a feeble 4-7 SU and 5-6 ATS tally in their last 11 tries.
The Texans have the distinct of advantage of having a game under their belt and that will prove to be the difference in this contest. Take Houston. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
