Off a pair of SU and ATS tournament victories over Miami and Ohio, Akron will punch its ticket to the Big Dance with a solid performance in the MAC Championship against this overachieving Kent squad. The Golden Flashes just hammered the Rockets and Falcons, and they’ll have issues when they battle the Zips on Saturday night.
This is a solid wagering spot for the No. 2 seed. In a pair of meetings against Kent this year, Akron prevailed in both winning and covering by finals of 77-71 and 83-70. Overall, in the last 11 matchups, the Zips hold a respectable 7-4 SU and 6-5 ATS record. Equally impressive, in the MAC Final, favorites priced at -3.5 or more have performed very well inking a profitable 11-4 SU and 10-5 ATS mark including a powerful 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS provided they take the floor off a pointspread victory. Finally, in the MAC Tournament facing a foe that owns a team won/loss percentage less than .560, head coach John Groce and his troops own a reliable 15-3 SU and ATS tally including a perfect 10-0 SU and ATS in their last 10 in this role.
There is a strong conference tournament system that works against Kent here. Since 1995, conference tournament underdogs priced at +4.5 or more that hold a team won/loss percentage of .500 or better own a woeful 50-73-3 provided they are rolling with same season double revenge. If our “play against” side is seeded at No. 6 or higher, this technical situation drops to a nasty 0-14 SU and 2-12 ATS. Also, the Golden Flashes hold a dismal 11-21 ATS tally in their last 32 lined games including a pitiful 3-14 ATS if they take the floor with steam off a straight up win.
