TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND
#309 NC STATE (-9′) over Virginia at 7:30 PM EST
Off last week’s 45-7 home win over VMI, NC State will travel to Scott Stadium and do a number on this winless Virginia squad. The Cavaliers are out of the gate with an 0-3 SU mark and they’re not about to get healthy in this ACC opener.
This will be an extremely emotional game for Wolfpack quarterback Brennan Armstrong. For the last three seasons, Armstrong was the starting signal-caller for Hoos, and he will be anxious to play well against his former team. A quick peek at the History Book shows that State has been worth the financial risk in this series lately inking an elite 12-6 ATS mark in the last 18 meetings including a reliable 10-2 ATS tally in this situation provided head coach Dave Doeren’s troops enter with confidence off a straight up win. Additionally, when coming off a strong defensive showing where they allowed seven points or less, NC State holds a respectable 27-17 ATS tally in its next game including an elite 14-5 ATS if the Wolfpack are facing a conference foe.
Sporting a dismal 3-14 SU and 6-10 ATS mark in its last 17 battles, Virginia is obviously having some issues on the football field right now. Even worse, as an ACC host tackling an opponent that enters with confidence off a straight up win, the Hoos hold a rough 13-26 SU and 14-23-2 ATS record including a pathetic 5-16 SU and ATS mark if they were on the road in their last game. Lastly, in their own backyard lined up against an opponent that arrives off a blowout victory of 20 points or more, the Cavaliers hold a stiff 17-31-2 ATS tally provided they are not going into revenge. If Virginia was on the road in its last contest, this team trend crashes to a miserable 6-16-1 ATS.
Defensively, the Cavs are allowing an average of 42.3 points and 451.7 total yards per game, and they’ll have trouble stopping a Wolfpack offensive attack that averages 31.0 points and 402.0 total yards per game. Take NC State. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
