Tom Stryker’s Free Baseball Play September 13th

TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH

#928 BALTIMORE with Gibson (-168) over St. Louis with Rom at 6:35 PM EST
Off last night’s 5-2 home loss to the Redbirds and with blemishes in two of their last three games, the Orioles will respond in this right back rematch. Baltimore’s advantage rests at 3.0-games in the AL East and manager Brandon Hyde knows his troops need this victory before a massive four-game homestand against second-place Tampa Bay over the weekend.

Veteran right-hander Kyle Gibson will hit the hill for the home team. Lined up against the Angels, White Sox, and Blue Jays in his last three starts, No. 48 was tagged for 13 earned runs and 18.1 innings of work. Kyle struck out 13 and walked three on his way to a 2-1 mark with a 6.38 ERA. Thankfully, Gibson has been at his statistical best under the lights surrendering just 65 earned runs and 133 hits in 123.2 frames. That adds up to a strong 11-4 tally with a reliable 4.73 ERA.

Greenhorn southpaw Drew Rom will pick up the pill for the visitors. With four career starts in the books, No. 38 was smashed for 15 earned runs and 25 hits in 17.1 innings. Drew fanned 11 and issued 10 free passes on his way to an 0-2 record with an elevated 7.79 ERA. Even worse, in three road outings, Rom was slammed for 12 earned runs and 20 hits in 12.2 frames. That’s bad enough for an 0-2 mark with a dismal 8.53 ERA.

There are a number of strong trends that support this wager. Baltimore has tasted victory in 58 of its last 91 when playing under the lamps, 34 of its last 50 when facing a left-handed starter, and 43 of its last 70 when playing in its own backyard. On the other side of the field, St. Louis has fallen in 81 of its last 145 battles and 60 of its last 107 when facing a right-handed starter.

With four games at home against the Rays, three on the road versus the Astros, and four more on foreign soil against the Guardians on deck, the Orioles know they must get the job done here. Take Baltimore with Gibson. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
