TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, AUGUST 28TH
#918 MINNESOTA with Maeda (-164) over Cleveland with Curry at 7:40 PM EST
Off a huge series win at home over the Rangers, the Twins will stay hot and scoop up another victory when the overachieving Guardians come to town. Minnesota’s lead in the AL Central rests at 6.0-games over Cleveland and manager Rocco Baldelli’s boys need a victory here to increase that advantage and take control of the division.
Veteran right-hander Kent Maeda will pick up the pill for the home team. Facing the Brew Crew, Tigers (twice), and Diamondbacks in the month of August, No. 18 was nicked for only eight earned runs and 16 hits in 21.0 innings. Kent fanned 23 and issued four free passes on his way to a 1-1 mark with a 3.43 ERA. Under the lights, Maeda has been at his statistical best surrendering just eight earned runs and 21 hits in 31.2 frames. That adds up to a 2-1 tally with a strong 2.27 ERA.
Young righty Xzavion Curry will hit the hump for the visitors. In the month of August, No. 44 made five appearances for the Guardians (four starts) and been punched for 11 earned runs and 22 hits in 19.2 innings of work. Xzavion struck out 15 and walked four on his way to an 0-1 record with a 5.03 ERA. Additionally, as a guest, Curry has been clipped for 16 earned runs and 36 hits in 35.0 frames. That equates to a 1-1 mark with a 4.11 ERA.
There are a couple of reliable team trends that back this investment. Cleveland has fallen in 38 of its last 62 when coming off a win. On the other side of the field, Minnesota has tasted victory in 39 of its last 66 inside Target Field.
The Twins can create some serious space in the AL Central standings provided they can take care of business against a Guardians bunch that has fallen in 36 of their last 65 on foreign soil. That’s exactly what Baldelli’s troops will do. Take Minnesota with Maeda. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
