TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, JULY 17TH

#907 TAMPA BAY with McClanahan (-130) over Texas with Dunning at 8:05 PM EST
Off yesterday’s 8-4 road loss to the Royals, the Devil Rays will have no trouble getting back on track with a solid victory in the Lone Star State. Texas enters this matchup off a three-game home sweep over Cleveland and this will prove to be a difficult encore for the Rangers.

Strong southpaw Shane McClanahan will take the mound for the guests. In the month of June, No. 18 made five starts and was nicked for only 11 earned runs and 21 hits in 26.1 innings of work. Shane fanned 19 and issued 11 free passes on his way to a 3-0 tally with a respectable 3.76 ERA. Overall, with 17 starts in the books, McClanahan has surrendered just 27 earned runs and 74 hits in 96.0 frames. That’s good enough for a stunning 11-1 mark with a powerful 2.53 ERA.

Right-hander Dane Dunning will counter for the home squad. Lined up against the Nationals, Red Sox, and Tigers in his last three performances, No. 33 was tripped for seven earned runs and 17 hits in 20.1 innings. Dane struck out 18 and walked three on his way to a 2-1 record with a 3.10 ERA. Overall, with 83 appearances in the books including 73 starts, Dunning has been dunked for 179 earned runs and 389 hits in 397.0 frames. That equates to a 19-20 mark with a 4.06 ERA.

A few quality team trends back this investment as well. Tampa Bay has won 47 of its last 78 against right-handed starters and 54 of its last 77 when priced as a favorite of -110 or higher. On the other side of the stadium, Texas has fallen in 62 of its last 100 in the second half of the season over the past two years.

The Devil Rays lead in the AL East is down to 1.0-game over the Orioles and they need to pick up the pace in a hurry. Take Tampa Bay with McClanahan. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
