Tom Stryker’s Free Baseball Play September 12th

TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH

#907 ATLANTA with Strider (-176) over San Francisco with Cobb at 9:45 PM EST
Checking in hungry off a pair of losses to the M’s, the Braves will get back on track with a solid performance over the Giants. San Francisco enters this National League battle off last night’s win in Chicago, and this is going to be a tough turnaround for manager Gabe Kapler and his crew.

Hitting the hump for the visitors will be young right-hander Spencer Strider. With 29 appearances in the books this season including 18 starts, No. 65 has been scratched for only 36 earned runs and 76 hits in 120.2 innings of work. Strider struck out 183 and walked 41 on his way to a 10-4 record with a strong 2.69 ERA. Spencer has been an absolute force under the lights too. With the candles burning, Strider was touched for 24 earned runs and 63 hits in 97.1 frames. That’s good enough for an 8-2 mark with an elite 2.22 ERA.

Countering for the home team will be righty Alex Cobb. So far this year, No. 38 has made 23 starts and been cracked for 50 earned runs and 121 hits in 122.1 innings. Cobb whiffed 126 and walked 37 on his way to a 5-6 mark with a 3.68 ERA. Surprisingly, Alex has a losing record at home. In his own backyard, Cobb was crushed for 20 earned runs and 56 hits in 70.0 frames. That’s bad enough for a 4-6 tally with a 2.57 ERA.

Several strong team trends support this investment. Atlanta has won 44 of its last 51 when facing a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage less than .500, 22 of its last 28 in the first game of a series, 40 of its last 53 after allowing five runs or more last, and 43 of its last 60 coming off a loss. On the other side of the field, San Francisco has dropped 35 of its last 51 at home coming off an extended road trip of seven or more days.

Currently resting 1.5-games back in the NL East behind the Mets, the Braves need to rally the troops and pick up a win here. Take Atlanta with Strider. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
