TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH
#923 MINNESOTA with Bundy (+106) over Chicago with Giolito at 2:10 PM EST
Off three consecutive losses including yesterday’s 13-0 embarrassment in the Windy City, the Twins will rally the troops and pick up a much-needed victory. Minnesota rests 1.0-game back in the AL Central division and, with a four-game set in the Big Apple against the Yankees on deck, manager Rocco Baldelli and his squad need this dub badly.
Hitting the hill for the visitors will be right-hander Dylan Bundy. With 23 starts in the books this season, No. 37 has allowed 57 earned runs and 117 hits in 113.1 innings of work. Bundy struck out 80 and walked 24 on his way to a 7-6 record with a 4.53 ERA. Dylan has been effective lately too. In his last four starts, Bundy has been nicked for just five earned runs and 16 hits in 20.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 1-1 mark with a strong 2.25 ERA.
Countering for the ChiSox will be righty Lucas Giolito. So far this year, No. 27 has made 24 starts and been clocked for 75 earned runs and 144 hits in 128.0 innings. Giolito whiffed 142 and walked 48 on his way to a 10-8 tally with a soft 5.27 ERA. Lucas has really struggled in his last four outings too. Facing the Royals, O’s, ‘Stros, and Tigers, Giolito was gashed for 17 earned runs and 26 hits in 21.2 frames. That’s bad enough for a 2-2 tally with an elevated 7.06 ERA.
There are a handful of elite trends that support this Best Bet. Minnesota has won seven of its last 10 when matched up against a division foe and six of its last eight after losing the first two games of a series. On the other side of the field, Chicago has fallen in five of its last seven in the third game of a series.
In eight starts against the Pale Hose (all team wins for the Twins), DB has assembled a powerful 6-0 record with a respectable 3.61 ERA. After almost being on the receiving end of a no-no, the Twinkies will respond with a solid performance here. Take Minnesota with Bundy. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
