Tom Stryker’s Free Baseball Play August 25th

TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION THURSDAY, AUGUST 25TH

#910 SEATTLE with Gonzales (+102) over Cleveland with McKenzie at 4:10 PM EST
Off yesterday’s 3-1 home loss to the Nats, the M’s will rebound with a solid performance over the visiting Guardians. Seattle holds the final spot in the hunt for the AL Wild Card and, with the O’s, Twins, and ChiSox all close behind in the standings, manager Scott Servais will make sure his troops take care of business here.

Soft-tossing southpaw Marco Gonzales will take the bump for the Mariners. So far this year, No. 7 has made 24 starts and surrendered 61 earned runs and 148 hits in 134.2 innings. Gonzales struck out 75 and issued 42 free passes on his way to an 8-12 tally with a 4.08 ERA. Marco’s numbers inside T-Mobile Park have been respectable too. With 62.2 frames completed, Gonzales has allowed only 29 earned runs and 71 hits. That equates to a 5-5 record with a 3.62 ERA.

Young right-hander Triston McKenzie will counter for the visitors. With 23 appearances in the books including 22 starts, No. 24 has surrendered 49 earned runs and 101 hits in 141.2 innings of work. McKenzie fanned 138 and walked 35 on his way to a 9-9 tally with a 3.11 ERA. It appears the M’s have given Triston fits too. In a pair of performances against the Mariners last season, McKenzie was mauled for six earned runs and five hits in 5.0 frames. That’s bad enough for an 0-1 mark and a lofty 10.80 ERA.

There are several strong team trends that support this investment. Seattle has won 38 of its last 56 overall, 45 of its last 63 facing a foe that allowed two runs or less previously, 30 of its last 43 facing a right-handed starter, and 11 of its last 16 after scoring two runs or less last.

After doing a number at Petco Park against the Friars, the Guardians will have trouble against an M’s bunch that plays very well in their own backyard. Take Seattle with Gonzales. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
