TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24TH

#974 SAN DIEGO with Snell (-162) over Cleveland with Quantrill at 4:10 PM EST
Off last night’s 3-1 home loss to the Guardians and after scoring a grand total of five runs in their last three games, the Padres offense will come alive in this revenge battle. San Diego holds a slim 1.5-game lead over Milwaukee for the final NL Wild Card spot and the Friars need this victory to keep their small advantage.

Up on the bump for the home team will be southpaw Blake Snell. With 16 starts in the bank this season, No. 4 has been touched for only 35 earned runs and 71 hits in 83.2 innings of work. Snell struck out 112 and walked 38 on his way to a 5-6 record with a 3.76 ERA. Blake is in outstanding form right now too. In fact, in his last six starts, Snell has surrendered just six earned runs and 28 hits in 33.2 innings. That’s good enough for a 4-1 mark with a strong 1.60 ERA.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill will grab the pearl for the visitors. So far this year, No. 47 has made 23 starts and been popped for 57 earned runs and 129 hits in 136.0 innings. Quantrill fanned 88 and issued 37 free passes on his way to a 9-5 tally with a 3.77 ERA. Cal’s efforts on foreign soil have been lacking though. With 56.0 road innings completed, Quantrill has been slammed for 27 earned runs and 62 hits. That equates to a 3-5 record with a 4.34 ERA.

There are a handful of power trends that support this Best Bet. San Diego has tasted victory in seven of its last nine when playing on Wednesday, nine of its last 13 when playing in its own backyard, and 35 of its last 52 when facing a right-handed starter from the American League. On the other side of the stadium, Cleveland has slipped in 43 of its last 60 as an interleague guest fighting a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .500.

The Padres are in the hunt for a playoff spot and how well they play at home the rest of the way out will likely determine their fate. After falling at Petco Park yesterday, the Friars need this one badly. Take San Diego with Snell. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
