#981 HOUSTON with Javier (+140) over Atlanta with Strider at 7:15 PM EST
After suffering a 6-2 road loss to the Braves last night, the Astros will bounce back with a strong effort in this interleague battle. Houston owns the best record in the AL and, at this nice underdog price, the ‘Stros are in prime position to pull off this minor upset.
Grabbing the pearl for the road team will be right-hander Cristian Javier. With 22 appearances to his credit this season including 18 starts, No. 53 has been extremely effective allowing only 35 earned runs and 70 hits in 106.1 innings of work. Javier struck out 138 and walked 39 on his way to a 7-8 mark with a solid 2.96 ERA. Cristian has been in solid form lately too. In fact, in his last five outings, Javier has surrendered just seven earned runs and 18 hits in 28.0 frames. That equates to a powerful 2.25 ERA.
Young righty Spencer Strider will grab the pill for the home team. So far this season, No. 65 has appeared in 25 games (14 starts) and been touched for 32 earned runs and 63 hits in 94.2 innings. Strider fanned 142 and issued 35 free passes on his way to a 7-4 tally and a 3.04 ERA. Spencer had a rough time in his last two outings against a solid Mets squad. Strider was slammed for five earned runs and nine hits in 7.2 frames. That adds up to a 1-1 mark with a soft 5.87 ERA.
Several rewarding team trends support this Best Bet. Houston has won 20 of its last 26 after scoring two runs or less, 25 of its last 33 when fighting a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .500, 37 of its last 52 coming off a loss, and 20 of its last 27 facing a foe that gave up two runs or less last. On the other side of the field, Atlanta has dropped 10 of its last 14 as an interleague host fighting a winning team.
The Astros are one of MLB’s best when coming off a loss and they’ll give us a little more bang for our buck with an upset here. Take Houston with Javier. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
