#906 ARIZONA with Kelly (-184) over Pittsburgh with Brubaker at 3:40 PM EST
Highly motivated off last night’s 6-4 blemish to the Bucs, the Diamondbacks will bounce back with a huge effort in the final battle of this four-game series. Arizona is staring at three games at Colorado and four at San Francisco, and manager Troy Lovullo wants to make sure his troops grab this dub before leaving.
Strong righty Merrill Kelly will handle the pearl for the home team. With 22 starts in the books this year, No. 29 has been in a zone surrendering only 42 earned runs and 110 hits in 132.1 innings of work. Kelly struck out 109 and walked 39 on his way to a 10-5 record with an elite 2.86 ERA. Merrill has been lights out in his last four starts too. Facing the Rockies, Braves, Giants, and Padres, Kelly was nipped for three earned runs and 19 hits in 28.0 frames. That’s good enough for a 2-0 tally with a phenomenal 0.96 ERA.
Hitting the hill for the visitors will be right-hander JT Brubaker. So far, No. 34 has made 56 appearances in three years (54 starts) and been pounded for 154 earned runs and 292 hits in 280.0 innings. Brubaker whiffed 288 and walked 99 on his way to a dismal 8-26 mark with a soft 4.95 ERA. JT isn’t in the best form either. Matched up against the O’s and Phillies in his last two outings, Brubaker was bombed for 10 earned runs and 20 hits in just 8.1 frames. After the math, that equates to an ugly 0-2 record with a rough 10.80 ERA.
This is a tough wagering spot for the Pirates as well. Pittsburgh has dropped 35 of its last 52 coming off a win, 123 of its last 175 on foreign soil, 38 of its last 56 after scoring five runs or more, and 48 of its last 69 as a guest fighting an opponent that holds a team won/loss percentage less than .500. On the other side of the park, Arizona has tasted victory in 21 of its last 28 in this series and seven of its last nine when playing in its own backyard.
With seven straight on the division road on deck, the D’Backs will make sure the close out their homestand with a win over the woeful Bucs. Take Arizona with Kelly. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
