#967 TAMPA BAY with Springs (-186) over Detroit with Hutchison at 7:10 PM EST
With a little steam off yesterday’s 3-2 home win over the Jays but still on a dismal 3-7 run in their last 10 games, the Devil Rays will travel to the Motor City and smash the struggling Tigers. Detroit enters this contest off a loss to Minnesota and the Kittens have fallen in 46 of its last 83 when facing opponents that own a team won/loss percentage of .500 or better.

Southpaw Jeffrey Springs will take the bump for the visitors. So far this year, No. 59 has appeared in 21 games (13 starts) and allowed only 22 earned runs and 66 hits in 73.1 innings. Springs holds a strikeout to walk ratio of 77-16 and sports a 3-3 record with a solid 2.70 ERA. Jeffrey’s efforts on foreign soil are worth noting too. As a guest, Springs has been nicked for 13 earned runs and 31 hits in 35.2 frames. That equates to a 2-1 tally with a respectable 3.11 ERA.

Right-hander Drew Hutchison will counter for the home team. With 17 total appearances in the books including seven starts, No. 40 was tagged for 25 earned runs and 45 hits in 49.2 innings of work. Hutchison fanned 32 and walked 24 on his way to a dismal 1-4 record with a 4.53 ERA. Drew’s efforts at home have been rough too. In his own backyard, Hutchision has been hacked for 14 earned runs and 28 hits in 25.1 frames. That’s bad enough for a 1-3 tally with a woeful 4.97 ERA.

This isn’t the best wagering spot for manager A.J. Hinch and his kids either. Detroit has slipped in 13 of its last 16 against teams from the AL East, 41 of its last 59 when playing on Thursday, and seven of its last nine after scoring two runs or less last. On the other side of the chalk line, Tampa Bay has been a dominant force in August over the past three years inking a jaw-dropping 42-14 record.

The Devil Rays own the last spot in the AL Wild Card standings by a whisker and they need wins over the Tigers to keep their slim advantage. Take Tampa Bay with Springs. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
