TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, JULY 29TH
#980 SAN DIEGO with Snell (-118) over Minnesota with Ryan at 9:40 PM EST
Checking in hungry off that ugly 4-3 loss to a dismal Tigers squad and with a day of rest, the Friars will pick up a huge win at home under the Friday night lights. The Twins stumble into this battle off a pair of road losses to the Brew Crew and manager Rocco Baldelli’s troops aren’t about to get healthy in this spot.
Hitting the hill for the home team will be left-hander Blake Snell. In 2022, No. 4 has made 11 starts for the Padres and allowed 29 earned runs and 47 hits in 55.0 innings. Snell fanned 71 and walked 33 on his way to a 2-5 tally with a 4.75 ERA. Blake is coming off one of his best starts of the season too. In a game against the mighty Mets on July 23rd, Snell surrendered no earned runs, four hits, struck out five, and grabbed the dub in the Friars 2-1 victory.
Young righty Joe Ryan will counter for the Twinkies. With 15 starts in the books, No. 41 has been tapped for 26 earned runs and 62 hits in 81.0 innings. Ryan fanned 73 and issued 26 free passes on his way to a 7-3 tally with a 2.89 ERA. Joe’s last four starts have been noteworthy too. With 22.0 frames completed, Ryan was clipped for five earned runs and 13 hits. That equates to a 1-0 record with a 2.05 ERA.
With both arms capable, the following trends will help push this Best Bet over the top. San Diego has quietly won eight of its last nine coming off a day of rest, 11 of its last 13 when playing on Friday, and four of its last five in the first game of a series. On the other side of the park, Minnesota has fallen in 41 of its last 59 as an interleague guest facing a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .500 and six of its last seven with a day in between games.
Padres manager Bob Melvin has challenged his kids to play better at home. Considering the Twins have won eight of their last 10 on this field, the Friars will primed and ready for this matchup. Take San Diego with Snell. Thanks and best of luck, Tom..
