TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, JULY 8TH
#958 ST. LOUIS with Wainwright (+108) over Philadelphia with Wheeler at 8:15 PM EST
In a dog fight in the NL Central with the Brew Crew, the Cardinals will do their best to win at home and shrink their deficit in the division standings. St. Louis is 2.5-games behind Milwaukee and manager Oliver Marmol knows his troops need to find some wins over Philadelphia in order to keep pace.
On the bump for the home team will Mr. Cardinal himself right-hander Adam Wainwright. In 2022, No. 50 has made 16 starts for the Redbirds and been nicked for 35 earned runs and 96 hits in 96.2 frames. Wainwright fanned 81 and walked 27 on his way to a 6-6 mark with a strong 3.26 ERA. Adam’s efforts inside Busch Stadium have been elite too. At home, Wainwright has surrendered just 11 earned runs and 39 hits in 44.0 innings. After the math, that equates to a 3-2 record with a 2.25 ERA.
Right-hander Zack Wheeler gets the nod for the visitors. On the season, No. 45 has made 15 starts for the Phillies and been touched for 26 earned runs and 74 hits in 88.0 innings. Wheeler whiffed 99 and walked 20 on his way to a 7-4 tally with a reliable 2.66 ERA. However, the road has been an issue for Zack. On foreign soil, Wheeler has been waxed for 16 earned runs and 37 hits in 32.1 frames. That shakes down to a 2-2 tally with a 4.45 ERA. (In comparison, at home, Zack holds a 5-2 mark with a sensational 1.62 ERA!)
There are several solid team trends that support this wager. St. Louis has won 71 of its last 108 games after scoring three runs or less in four straight battles, nine of its last 12 after allowing two runs or less in its previous contest, and 11 of its last 16 when playing at home. On the other side of the stadium, Philadelphia has fallen in 50 of its last 95 as a competitively priced favorite of -150 or less.
The Redbirds have 10 straight games at home on tap and they need to make them count in order to take over the lead in the NL Central. Take St. Louis with Wainwright. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
