#901 MILWAUKEE RUN-LINE with Woodruff (-1 -110) over Pittsburgh with Quintana at 1:35 PM EST
Off yesterday’s 7-4 road loss to the Bucs and with a series blemish on the line, the Brew Crew will respond with one of their best performances of the season here. Milwaukee’s advantage in the NL Central rests at just 1.0-game over St. Louis and, with three home wars against Chicago and Pittsburgh on deck, manager Craig Counsell’s kids know they can create some space in the division by taking care of business against the NL Central’s worst teams.
Strong righty Brandon Woodruff will take the mound for the visitors. In his last start at Tampa Bay on June 28th, No. 53 tossed a gem allowing only one earned run and two hits in 5.0 innings of work. Woodruff struck out 10, issued no walks, and grabbed the win in the Brewers 5-3 victory. Brandon’s last three performances in this series have been solid too. When matched up against the Brew Crew, Woodruff surrendered only six earned runs and 12 hits in 17.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 2-0 tally with a strong 3.18 ERA.
Aging southpaw Jose Quintana will counter for the home team. With 15 starts in the books this year, No. 62 has been punched for 29 earned runs and 73 hits in 76.0 innings. Quintana fanned 67 and issued 25 free passes on his way to a 1-4 tally with a 3.43 ERA. Jose’s efforts during the day have been an issue too. With the sun shining, Quintana has been slammed for 16 earned runs and 38 hits in 42.2 frames. That shakes down to an 0-2 mark with a 3.38 ERA.
A handful of respectable team trends support this investment. Milwaukee has tasted victory in 23 of its last 34 against division foes, 75 of its last 111 when facing a team with a losing record, and 40 of its last 55 in this series. On the other side of the chalk line, Pittsburgh has fallen in 38 of its last 56 after scoring five runs or more last, 70 of its last 103 versus division foes, and 56 of its last 81 when fighting an opponent that owns a team won/loss percentage of .501 or better.
If the Brewers want to create some breathing room in the NL Central, then they’ll need to go on a run in their next seven games. Take Milwaukee with Woodruff. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
