TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, JUNE 21ST
#901 LA DODGERS with Gonsolin (-180) over Cincinnati with Mahle at 6:40 PM EST
Currently tied with the Padres for the top spot in the NL West and off a home loss to the Indians on Sunday, the Dodgers will travel to Great American Ball Park and smash the struggling Reds. Off four consecutive losses, Cincy now rests 20.0-games under .500 and they don’t match up well in this contest at all.
Sizzling right-hander Tony Gonsolin will take the mound for the visitors. With 12 starts completed this season, No. 26 has been touched for only 10 earned runs and 32 hits in 63.1 innings of work. Gonsolin struck out 60 and walked 20 on his way to a phenomenal 8-0 mark with an elite 1.42 ERA. Tony’s last three outings have been amazing too. Matched up against the Halos, White Sox, and Mets, Gonsolin was nicked for only one earned run and six hits in 18.1 frames. After the math, that equates to a 3-0 tally with a beautiful 0.49 ERA.
Right-hander Tyler Mahle will grab the pearl for the home squad. In his last performance on the road against the Diamondbacks, No. 30 tossed a gem allowing no earned runs and three hits in 9.0 innings. Mahle whiffed 12, issued no free passes, but failed to earn a decision in the Reds 5-3 victory. Unfortunately, Tyler’s efforts in his own backyard haven’t been that great. At home, Mahle has been smashed for 23 earned runs and 39 hits in 41.1 frames. That shakes down to an 0-3 record with a 5.01 ERA.
A multitude of powerful trends support this investment. Los Angeles has won 47 of its last 58 when matched up against an opponent that holds a team won/loss percentage less than .400, 53 of its last 76 when fighting NL Central foes, 43 of its last 62 coming off a day of rest, and 44 of its last 64 in the first game of a series. On the other side of the park, Cincinnati has slipped in 38 of its last 54 when coming off a loss, 37 of its last 52 facing NL West teams, and 20 of its last 26 when fighting a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .600.
The Dodgers have some competition in the division this year and they’ll need to take care of business on the road against one of the MLB’s worst teams. Take Los Angeles with Gonsolin. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
