TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, JUNE 14TH

#973 HOUSTON with Urquidy (-126) over Texas with Dunning at 8:05 PM EST
After blowing a 3-1 lead in last night’s loss to the Rangers, the Astros will be sure to finish the job here. Houston still holds a commanding 36-15 mark in the last 51 battles in this series and the ‘Stros will bounce back with a solid effort in this right-back rematch.

Taking the mound for the visitors will be right-hander Jose Urquidy. With 11 completed starts in the books, No. 65 has been slapped for 31 earned runs and 76 hits in 55.1 innings. Urquidy struck out 43 and walked 12 on his way to a 5-3 tally with a 5.04 ERA. Thankfully, Jose’s last three outings against the Lone Stars have been much better. Urquidy was nicked for only four earned runs and 15 hits in 19.2 frames in his previous three performances against the Rangers. After the math, that adds up to a solid 2-0 record with a strong 1.83 ERA.

Righty Dane Dunning will grab the pearl for manager Chris Woodward’s crew. In his last four starts for the Rangers (all Texas losses), No. 33 was cracked for 13 earned runs and 30 hits in 21.2 frames. Dunning fanned 21 and issued four free passes on his way to an 0-2 tally with a soft 5.40 ERA. Dan’s last two starts against the ‘Stros haven’t been that great either. With 9.2 innings in the bank, Dunning was slammed for six earned runs and 12 hits. That equates to an 0-1 tally with a 5.59 ERA.

There are a number of reliable team trends that support this investment. Houston has won 10 of its last 13 when coming off a loss, 23 of its last 30 when competing on Tuesday, and 14 of its last 20 when fighting teams from the AL West. On the other side of the park, Texas has fallen in 89 of its last 138 when matched up against a right-handed starter over the past two seasons.

With a 7.5-game advantage in the division over the Lone Stars, the Astros will extend that margin with a solid victory in Arlington. Take Houston with Urquidy. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
