TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8TH
#979 LA DODGERS with Gonsolin (-167) over Chicago with Cueto at 8:10 PM EST
If at first you don’t succeed, try again. The Dodgers let us down last night falling to the White Sox 4-0 and manager Dave Roberts’ crew will get after it in the Windy City in this right-back rematch. LA’s lead in the competitive NL West is down to 1.5-games over San Diego and the Boys in Blue need this victory badly.
Sizzling right-hander Tony Gonsolin will take the mound for the road team. With 10 completed starts in the 2022 books, No. 26 has been absolutely outstanding allowing only nine earned runs and 28 hits in 51.0 innings. Gonsolin struck out 49 and walked 17 on his way to a stunning 6-0 mark and an amazing 1.59 ERA. Tony’s last three starts have been lights out too. Facing the Mets, Diamondbacks, and Phillies, Gonsolin has surrendered just three earned runs and nine hits in 18.0 frames. That’s good enough for a 2-0 tally with a powerful 1.50 ERA.
Veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto will get the nod for the ChiSox. Matched up against the Blue Jays and Cubs in his last two trips to the bump, No. 47 was drilled for eight earned runs and 16 hits in 12.2 innings. Cueto whiffed seven and walked three on his way to an 0-2 tally with a woeful 5.69 ERA. Johnny is no stranger to LA either. Since 2020, Cueto has faced the Dodgers three times and been tapped for 10 earned runs and 14 hits in 15.1 frames. Johnny struck out 14 and walked six en route to a 2-0 record with a 5.87 ERA.
Several strong team trends support this wager. Los Angeles has won 39 of its last 51 in the second game of a series, 38 of its last 51 after scoring two runs or less last, 27 of its last 38 when coming off a loss, and 40 of its last 55 when facing an opponent that allowed two runs or less last. On the other side of Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago has slipped in 10 of its last 14 against AL Central foes and 47 of its last 66 when priced as an underdog.
The heat is on his in the NL West and the Dodgers know they need to bounce back off yesterday’s shutout loss especially with their best arm on the bump. Take Los Angeles with Gonsolin. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
