TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JUNE 5TH

#922 TAMPA BAY with Yarbrough (-110) over Chicago with Giolito at 1:40 PM EST
Off yesterday’s home loss to the Pale Hose, the Rays will bounce right back in this American League battle. Tampa Bay’s deficit in the AL East rests at 7.0 games and winning at home is a high priority in order to stay competitive in the division.

Southpaw Ryan Yarbrough will toe the rubber for the home team. With six appearances in the books this season including five starts, No. 48 has been tapped for 12 earned runs and 26 hits in 27.0 innings of work. Yarbrough struck out 20 and walked eight on his way to a surprising 0-2 tally with a 4.00 ERA. Revenge will be on Ryan’s mind too. Back on June 16th, 2021, Yarbrough faced the White Sox in the Windy City and was hammered for five earned runs and 10 hits in 6.1 frames. Ryan failed to earn a decision in the Rays 8-7 beating.

Righty Lucas Giolito will counter for the visitors. In his last performance at Toronto, No. 27 was pounded for six earned runs and eight hits in only 4.2 innings. Giolito walked two, served up two home runs, and was tagged with the “L” in the Jays 6-5 victory. The road has been an issue for Lucas too. On foreign soil, Giolito was clipped for 12 earned runs and 23 hits in 23.1 frames. That equates to a 1-1 tally with a soft 4.63 ERA.

A number of elite team trends support this investment. Tampa Bay has won seven of its last nine when coming off a loss, 56 of its last 81 when facing a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage less than .500, 39 of its last 57 in the third game of a series, and 64 of its last 94 when playing in its own backyard. On the other side of the field, Chicago has fallen in four of its last five against a left-handed starter and nine of its last 12 in the third game of a series.

The Rays got some work to do in the competitive AL East and they need this home win in order to stay in the hunt. Take Tampa Bay with Yarbrough. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
