TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1ST

#907 ATLANTA with Wright (-147) over Arizona with Bumgarner at 3:40 PM EST
Off a pair of blemishes to the D’Backs, the Braves will get after it in the desert on Wednesday afternoon. In second place in the NL East a whopping 10.5-games behind New York, Atlanta needs wins badly in order to stay alive in the division.

Right-hander Kyle Wright will grab the pearl looking to turn things around for Hotlanta. With nine starts in the bank this year, No. 30 has been incredibly effective on the mound allowing just 16 earned runs and 38 hits in 53.2 innings of work. Wright struck out 61 and walked 18 en route to a 4-3 record with a solid 2.68 ERA. Kyle pitched well in his last road outing too. At Miami on May 21st, Wright limited the Marlins to no earned runs and two hits in 5.0 frames. Kyle struck out six and picked up the victory in the Braves 4-3 win.

Veteran southpaw Madison Bumgarner will counter for the home team. In his last three performances against the Dodgers, Cubs, and LA (again), No. 40 was smashed for 12 earned runs and 18 hits in 18.0 innings. Bumgarner walked four and served up five home runs on his way to an 0-2 tally with an elevated 6.00 ERA. Even though Madison has enjoyed a little success in this series (4-0 with a 2.33 ERA in his last seven starts), asking the D’Backs to sweep the defending World Series Champions is a bit much.

There are a number of powerful team trends that back this investment. Atlanta has won four of its last five after slipping in the first two games of a series, 50 of its last 70 when coming off a loss, and 35 of its last 51 after allowing five runs or more last. On the other side of the yard, Arizona has fallen in 50 of its last 69 in the third game of a series and 72 of its last 101 after allowing five runs or more in its last game.

With the Mets running away with the division, the defending champs really can’t afford to get swept by the Diamondbacks right now. Take Atlanta with Wright. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
