TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH

#910 COLORADO with Freeland (-120) over Chicago with Steele at 8:40 PM EST
Winners of four straight, Colorado will head back to the Rocky Mountains off a successful run at Texas and punish visiting Chicago. The Cubs arrive off yesterday’s 6-2 road loss to the Pirates, and they’ll have trouble getting out of the gate in Denver’s high altitude.

Hitting the hill for the home team will be left-hander Kyle Freeland. Back on April 8th, No. 21 got his first start in Colorado against the Dodgers, and he was roughed up for five earned runs and five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Freeland whiffed six and walked two but was tagged with the 5-2 loss. In 2021, Kyle made 23 starts for the Rockies and he was touched for 58 earned runs and 133 hits in 120.2 innings. Freeland fanned 105 and issued 38 free passes and that was good enough for a 7-8 mark with a 4.33 ERA.

Southpaw Justin Steele will counter for the Cubs. In his first performance of the young season back on April 9th, No. 35 tossed a gem against the Brew Crew surrendering no earned runs and four hits in 5.0 frames. Steele struck out five, walked one, and grabbed the dub in Chicago’s 9-0 blowout victory. Unfortunately, in his lone outing in the Windy City against the Rockies back on August 25th, 2021, Justin was jacked for four earned runs and five hits in only 3.2 innings. Steele served up one home run and walked a pair but failed to earn a decision in the Cubbies 13-10 loss.

A number of quality angles support this diamond wager. Colorado has tasted victory in 19 of its last 26 when facing a left-handed starter and 83 of its last 118 when priced as home chalk. On the other side of the diamond, Chicago has dropped 35 of its last 52 after scoring two runs or less in its last contest, 41 of its last 60 when coming off a loss, and 21 of its last 30 when facing a lefty starter.

Resting on top in the National League West, the Rockies know they’ll need to defend Coors Field if they want to stay in that position. Take Colorado with Freeland. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
