TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, MARCH 27TH
#644 NORTH CAROLINA (-8′) over St. Peter’s at 5:05 PM EST
In a zone off 10 straight wins and covers, Cinderella St. Peter’s will finally fall in its Elite 8 battle against North Carolina. Head coach Hubert Davis has the Tar Heels peaking right now off three consecutive SU and ATS victories over the Golden Eagles, Bears, and Bruins, and they’ll advance to the Final Four with a solid performance over the Peacocks.
As a non-conference favorite, UNC has been at its financial best posting a solid 229-165-5 ATS record including a dependable 185-125-5 ATS if it holds a team won/loss percentage of .750 or better. There is a strong NCAA Tournament angle that backs the Tar Heels too. In the Sweet 16, teams seeded at No. 4 or higher (to No. 16) that enter on a 3-0 SU and ATS run or better hold a powerful 25-5-1 ATS provided they own an offensive average of 68.0 points per game or better and hold a pointspread won/loss percentage greater than .517. North Carolina fits this technical situation perfectly.
St. Peter’s is certainly the Big Dance darling. That fact is noted. However, this isn’t the best wagering spot for the Peacocks. Since 1991, teams in the NCAA Tournament that are carrying the No. 15 seed hold a woeful 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS record provided they are matched up against an opponent that owns a seed of No. 8 or higher. Also, when facing a foe that checks in on a 3-0 SU and ATS run or better, St. Peter’s sports a weak 10-18 SU and 11-15-2 ATS mark including an ugly 3-8 SU and 2-9 ATS provided the Peacocks own a team won/loss percentage of .475 or better.
Respect is given to St. Peter’s and its magnificent run in the NCAA Tournament. However, Coach Davis owns the better overall talent, and the ACC-pedigree will prove to be too much in the end. Take North Carolina. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
