TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH
#715 HOUSTON (-7) over SMU at 7 PM EST
Since that frustrating one-point loss against Alabama, Houston has ripped off a stunning 12-0 SU and 7-5 ATS record in its last 12 games. That Cougars winning streak won’t come to an end in Dallas either. SMU limps into this AAC battle off a woeful 15-point whipping at Wichita State and this will prove to be another massive challenge for head coach Tim Jankovich and his troops.
In the last eight meetings between these two schools, UH has been in complete control sporting a strong 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS record. Equally impressive, since the start of the 2017-18 season, the Cougars have been at their best posting a proud 131-26 SU and 85-57-1 ATS record including an elite 72-15 SU and 55-31-1 ATS provided their opponent holds a pointspread won/loss percentage of .470 or better. In addition, when running the floor against a foe that busts in without confidence off a straight up loss, head coach Kelvin Sampson’s boys own a healthy 49-3 SU and 29-16-1 ATS mark including a strong 37-3 SU and 25-12-1 ATS provided they check in with steam off a straight up win.
SMU is locked into one of its worst financial roles too. When running the court against a foe that enters off a SU and ATS win, the Mustangs own a rough 15-20 SU and 10-23-2 ATS record in their last 35 games. In this setting priced as a favorite or an underdog of +9 or less, the Ponies fall to a feeble 7-22-2 ATS including a shocking 0-8 SU and ATS if they are just a puppy. Please note: Those eight blemishes came by an average of 14.1 points per game. Finally, as a home dog competing against a foe that owns a team won/loss percentage of .801 or better, SMU sports a stiff 0-31 SU and 8-22-1 ATS tally including a rough 0-22 SU and 4-18 ATS if its opponent hits the hardwood off a double-digit straight up victory.
Ranked No. 1 in field-goal percentage defense (36.0), No. 2 in scoring margin (+20.4), and No. 3 in scoring defense (56.6 ppg), Coach Sampson and the red-hot Cougars will prove to be too much for the Mustangs. Take Houston. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
