Tom Stryker’s Free Baseball Play September 21st

TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST

#974 OAKLAND with Blackburn (-135) over Seattle with Gonzales at 9:40 PM EST
Off last night’s 4-2 blemish to the M’s and with wins in five of their last six battles, the A’s will bounce back with a solid victory on Tuesday. Resting 7.0-games back in the AL West, Oakland’s ticket to October baseball likely runs through the AL Wild Card and, with a 2.0-game deficit there, the Athletics need this home win like blood.

Right-hander Paul Blackburn will toe the rubber for the home team. In his last three starts against the Royals, Rangers, and Blue Jays, No. 58 was tripped for 10 earned runs and 21 hits in 11.1 innings of work. Blackburn walked whiffed nine and walked three on his way to a 1-1 record and a soft 7.94 ERA. Back on August 23rd, Paul got the start against Seattle on this very same field and was nicked for two earned runs and five hits in 5.2 frames. Blackburn fanned five, issued no walks, and failed to earn a decision in the Mariners 5-3 victory.

Left-hander Marco Gonzales will counter for the road team. Matched up against the BoSox and D’Backs (twice) in his last three outings, No. 7 was crunched for eight earned runs and 15 hits in 17.0 innings. Gonzales struck out 12 and walked four on his way to a 2-0 record with a 4.24 ERA. Overall, in his last 12 performances, Marco has been in great form inking a 7-0 tally with a strong 2.70 ERA.

Even though the M’s have the edge on the mound, the home team owns the technical advantage. Oakland has tasted victory in 38 of its last 56 at home against a left-handed starter and 121 of its last 185 when priced as a home favorite. On the other side of RingCentral Coliseum, Seattle has slipped in 45 of its last 67 when playing on Tuesday and four straight in the second game of a series.

Resting 2.0-games back of the final AL Wild Card spot with 12 games remaining, the A’s need to make sure they win their home games going forward. Take Oakland with Blackburn. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
