TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH

#916 TAMPA BAY RUN-LINE with Head (-1.5 -110) over Detroit with Alexander at 7:10 PM EST
After dropping two of three to the Tigers in the Motor City last week, the Devil Rays will be happy to return the favor when Detroit pays a visit starting on Thursday. The overachieving Tigers have won three straight and five of their last six and tonight’s battle will prove to be a tough venue for manager A.J. Hinch and his crew.

This will be a bullpen game for the home team and right-hander Louis Head will get the pearl first. In 23 appearances for the Rays including one actual start, No. 58 was nicked for nine earned runs and 20 hits in 30.1 frames. Head fanned 27 and walked nine on his way to a 1-0 record and a reliable 2.67 ERA. When his time is up, manager Kevin Cash will flip the ball over to southpaw Dietrich Enns. With six appearances in this books this season, Enns has surrendered only six earned runs and 14 hits in 16.0 innings. After the math, that adds up to a 1-0 mark and a solid 3.38 ERA.

Left-hander Tyler Alexander will counter for the visitors. In his last performance against these same Rays back on September 10th, No. 70 was cracked for one earned run and five hits in 4.1 innings. Alexander whiffed four, walked two, and failed to earn a decision in Detroit’s 10-4 victory. Overall, with 37 appearances in the books including 11 starts this year, Tyler has been ripped for 38 earned runs and 85 hits in 83.2 frames. That equates to a 2-2 record and a 4.09 ERA.

Plenty of power trends line up on this Best Bet. Tampa Bay has won 10 of its last 12 on Thursday, nine of its last 12 in the first game of a series, 38 of its last 51 when priced as a home favorite, and 39 of its last 54 when fighting a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage less than .500. On the other side of the stadium, Detroit has fallen in 38 of its last 55 on Thursday and 179 of its last 263 when competing against a foe that holds a winning record.

With their magic number resting at nine, the Devil Rays will use the strength of their home turf to race past the Tigers in this matchup. Take Tampa Bay on the run line with Head. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
