TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH
#914 NY YANKEES with Taillon (-127) over Toronto with Ryu at 1:05 PM EST
Off a pair of shocking one-run home losses to the O’s, the Bronx Bombers will bust out of their funk with a solid performance against the visiting Blue Jays. Toronto enters this contest off four consecutive wins and this will be a tough spot for the overachieving Blue Birds.
Hitting the hill for the Pinstripes will be right-hander James Taillon. In his last two starts on the road against the Halos and Athletics, No. 50 was roughed up for eight earned runs and nine hits in 9.0 innings of work. Taillon fanned nine and walked three on his way to a 1-0 record and a feeble 8.00 ERA. Thankfully, James has been a force inside Yankee Stadium. At home, Taillon has been scratched for only 26 earned runs and 57 hits in 69.2 frames. That’s good enough for a 5-1 mark and a strong 3.36 ERA.
Countering for the visitors will be southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu. Matched up against the Orioles and White Sox in his last two performances, Ryu was pounded for 10 earned runs and 10 hits in only 9.1 innings. No. 99 fanned 10, walked four, and served up three home runs on his way to an 0-2 tally and an elevated 9.65 ERA. Even though Hyun Jin holds a 5-3 record, his numbers in daytime starts aren’t that great. When pitching with the sun shining, Ryu has been spanked for 33 earned runs and 70 hits in 66.2 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 4.46 ERA.
There are several strong team trends that support this diamond wager. New York has won six of its last seven in the first game of a series, 12 of its last 15 when facing a foe that scored five runs or more last, 24 of its last 33 as a favorite, and 117 of its last 173 when playing in its own backyard. On the other side of the stadium, Toronto has slipped in 18 of its last 26 as a guest in this division series, seven of its last 10 after scoring five runs or more last, and six of its last seven when priced as a road pup.
With the Red Sox staring at the Devil Rays, White Sox, and Mariners over the next nine games, the Yankees can know they can create some space between them in the AL East standings by taking care of business in the Big Apple over their next seven battles. Take New York with Taillon. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
