TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, AUGUST 17TH

#920 DETROIT with Mize (-132) over LA Angels with Bundy at 7:10 PM EST
Off Sunday’s ugly 11-0 shutout home loss to the Indians and with a day of rest, the Tigers will get back on track with a solid performance over the visiting Halos. Los Angeles enters this contest off a tough one-run blemish to the Bronx Bombers in the Big Apple on Monday and this is going to be a tough spot for manager Joe Maddon and his troops.

Hitting the hill for the Motor City Kitty’s will be the future of the franchise in right-hander Casey Mize. Since June 26th, No. 12 has made eight starts for the Tigers and been touched for only 16 earned runs and 37 hits in 38.0 innings of work. Mize whiffed 28 and walked eight on his way to a 2-2 record with a solid 3.79 ERA. Back on June 20th, Casey got the call against the Angels in Los Angeles and was nipped for three earned runs and eight hits in 5.0 frames. Mize fanned four and issued one free pass but failed to earn a decision in the Tigers 5-3 victory.

Righty Dylan Bundy will be making his fourth consecutive start for the visitors. In his last three trips to the bump matched up against the Blue Jays, Rangers, and A’s, No. 37 was popped for six earned runs and nine hits in 14.2 innings. Bundy struck out 10 and walked six on his way to a 1-2 tally with a 3.68 ERA. Pitching under the lights has been an issue for Dylan all season long. At night, Bundy has been bashed for 36 earned runs and 48 hits in 43.1 frames. That’s bad enough for a 1-6 record with a woeful 7.48 ERA.

There are a number of highly profitable team trends that support this Best Bet. Detroit has won seven straight after allowing five runs or more last, seven of its last eight when coming off a day of rest, 14 of its last 19 at home, and eight of its last 10 when priced as a favorite in its own backyard. On the other side of Comerica Park, Los Angeles has fallen in 65 of its last 96 when facing an opposing starting pitcher that owns a WHIP less than 1.15.

The Tigers have been playing well lately with victories in four of their last six games and they will have no trouble grabbing this victory matched up against this tired Halos bunch. Take Detroit with Mize. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
