TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JULY 25TH
#964 BOSTON with Perez (-146) over NY Yankees with German at 1:10 PM EST
Off yesterday’s 4-3 home loss to the Bronx Bombers, the BoSox will go for the series win on Sunday inside Fenway Park. The Red Sox are currently tied with the Devil Rays for the top spot in the AL East and they need this victory in order to stay there.
Southpaw Martin Perez will hit the hump for the Boys from Beantown. In his last start in the Big Apple against the Pinstripes on July 18th, No. 54 was roughed up for three earned runs and five hits in only 4.0 innings of work. Perez struck out five, walked one, served up one home run, and was tagged with the loss in the Yankees 9-1 victory. Thankfully, Martin has been at his best in daytime performance. With the sun shining, Perez has been scratched for 11 earned runs and 28 hits in 28.2 frames. After the math, that equates to a 3-2 tally with a solid 3.45 ERA.
Righty Domingo German will counter for the visitors. On July 20th, No. 55 got the start at home against the Phillies and was tapped for two earned runs and three hits in 4.0 innings. German whiffed five, walked three, served up one gopher ball, but failed to earn a decision in the Yanks 6-4 victory. To make matters worse, Domingo has been terrible when pitching under the clear blue skies. In daytime starts, German has been gashed for 24 earned runs and 46 hits in 36.1 frames. That’s bad enough for a 1-4 record with a stiff 5.94 ERA.
You’ve got several reliable team trends out there supporting this wager too. Boston has tasted victory in eight of its last 10 at home matched up against a right-handed starter, 15 of its last 20 when priced as home chalk, and 26 of its last 36 matched up against division foes. On the other side of the chalk line, New York has quietly slipped in 14 of its last 20 when priced as a road underdog.
The Red Sox have the Devil Rays right on their tail right now and they need to dominate their home games in the second half of the season in order to stay on top in the division. Take Boston with Perez. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
