TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JULY 11TH
#914 SAN DIEGO with Weathers (-165) over Colorado with Gray at 4:10 PM EST
Focused and determined off yesterday’s 2-0 shutout home loss to the Rockies, the Padres will pick up the series victory with a solid performance on Sunday afternoon. Colorado enters this contest with a woeful 8-34 SU mark on the road and their foreign soil trouble will continue in this spot.
Southpaw Ryan Weathers will take the mound for the Friars. In a pair of July starts against the Nationals and Reds, No. 40 was touched for six earned runs and 12 hits in 9.1 innings of work. Weathers fanned seven and walked four en route to a 1-0 tally with a 5.79 ERA. Thankfully, Petco Park has treated Ryan well this season. At home, Weathers has been scratched for only 11 earned runs and 28 hits in 29.0 frames. That equates to a 2-1 mark and a 3.41 ERA.
The Rockies will send right-hander Jon Gray to the bump. Facing the Diamondbacks, Pirates, and Brewers in his last three starts, No. 55 was popped for five earned runs and 13 hits in 17.0 innings. Gray whiffed 23 and walked five en route to a 1-0 record and a 2.65 ERA. Unfortunately, pitching on the road has been a problem for Jon. As a guest, Gray has surrendered 18 earned runs and 40 hits in 29.2 frames. That adds up to a dismal 0-4 mark and a weak 5.46 ERA.
A handful of elite team trends back this solid investment too. San Diego has won 25 of its last 33 in its own backyard, 23 of its last 32 when playing on Sunday, five of its last seven when coming off a loss, and 53 of its last 74 as home chalk. On the other side of the chalk lines, Colorado has fallen in 41 of its last 51 as a road underdog and 51 of its last 72 when facing a foe with a team won/loss percentage greater than .500.
The Padres are 5.0-games back in the NL West division and they can’t afford to lose in their own backyard to a poor traveler like the Rocks. Take San Diego with Weathers. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
