TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JULY 4TH
#957 CHICAGO with Hendricks (+115) over Cincinnati with Miley at 1:10 PM EST
Currently riding an eight-game losing streak, the Cubs will bust out of their funk and scoop up a huge division win. The Reds are overachieving a touch off three consecutive wins, and they’ll have their hands full in this NL Central battle.
In order to stop the bleeding, Cubbies manager David Ross will hand the pearl to veteran right-hander Kyle Hendricks. In six June outings, No. 28 was nicked for only 12 earned runs and 30 hits in 36.1 innings of work. Hendricks fanned 27 and walked eight on his way to a stunning 5-0 mark with an elite 2.97 ERA. The road has been kind to Kyle too. On foreign soil, Hendricks has been touched for 19 earned runs and 48 hits in 43.2 frames. That equates to a sensational 5-1 record with a strong 3.92 ERA.
Left-hander Wade Miley will counter for the Big Red Machine. In his last four outings against the Phillies, Twins, Padres, and Rockies, No. 22 was tagged for 10 earned runs and 23 hits in 27.0 innings. Miley whiffed 21 and walked six en route to a 1-0 tally and a 3.33 ERA. Overall, with 14 starts in the books in 2021, Wade has surrendered 28 earned runs and 69 hits in 81.2 frames. That equates to a 6-4 record with a 3.09 ERA.
There are a couple of quality team trends that support this Best Bet. Cincinnati has slipped in 27 of its last 38 when facing a foe that scored two runs or less last. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Great American Ball Park, Chicago has come out on top in five of its last seven Sunday battles and eight of its last nine with KH holding the pearl.
The Cubs have slipped into third place in the division (8.5-games behind the first place Brew Crew) and they simply can’t afford to be swept on the road by the Reds. Take Chicago with Hendricks. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
