TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, JULY 3RD
#901 SAN DIEGO with Darvish (-150) over Philadelphia with Eflin at 4:05 PM EST
In a bad mood off a pair of one-run losses to the Phillies and Reds, the Padres will scoop up a huge road win at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia has alternated wins and losses over its last eight games and manager Joe Girardi’s boys will be in trouble here.
Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish will hit the hump for the visitors. In his last two starts against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, No. 11 was scratched for only two earned runs and eight hits in 12.0 innings. Darvish fanned 18 and walked only two on his way to a 1-0 tally and a powerful 1.50 ERA. Overall, with 16 starts to his credit this year, Yu has been nicked for only 26 earned runs and 67 hits in 96.0 frames. After the math, that equates to a sensational 7-2 mark with a stunning 2.44 ERA.
Righty Zach Eflin will counter for the home team. Matched up against the Mets, Giants and Dodgers in his last three performances, No. 56 was tagged for 10 earned runs and 21 hits in 16.0 frames. Eflin assembled a 12-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in those outings and registered an 0-1 mark and a soft 5.63 ERA. Day starts have been a problem for Zach too. When pitching with the lights turned off, Eflin has been smacked for 18 earned runs and 38 hits in only 34.2 frames. That’s bad enough for an 0-3 tally with a 4.67 ERA.
A few reliable trends support this wager too. San Diego has won 28 of its last 39 in games when it was favored and eight of its last 11 when matched up against a right-handed starter. On the other side of the park, Philadelphia has fallen in 15 of its last 22 when battling a team from the NL West and 25 of its last 34 following a straight up win.
In the No. 3 slot in the NL West standings just 3.5-games from the top spot, the Padres will lean on one of their best arms to grab this important victory. Take San Diego with Darvish. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
