TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION THURSDAY, JULY 1ST
#909 NY METS with deGrom (-161) over Atlanta with Anderson at 7:20 PM EST
Completely embarrassed off last night’s 20-2 beatdown, the Mets will respond with a solid outing of their own with their ace on the mound. The Braves have alternated wins and losses over their last six battles, and they’ll be in trouble in this division war.
Hitting the hill for the visitors will be sizzling right-hander Jacob deGrom. With 13 starts in the bank this season, No. 48 has been unhittable allowing only six earned runs and 30 hits in 78.0 innings of work. Amazingly, deGrom holds a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 122-11 and carries a 7-2 record with an elite 0.69 ERA. The road has been a special place for Jacob too. On foreign soil, deGrom has been touched for no earned runs and 11 hits in 25.0 frames. That’s good enough for a 3-0 mark with a stunning 0.00 ERA.
Right-hander Ian Anderson will counter for the Braves. In his last three performances against the Reds, Mets, and Red Sox, No. 36 was cranked for seven earned runs and 15 hits in 15.1 innings. Anderson whiffed 19 and walked three on his way to a 1-1 mark and a 4.11 ERA. Ian has been marginal at best in his own backyard too. At home, Anderson has surrendered 18 earned runs and 32 hits in 37.2 frames. That equates to a 2-1 tally with a 4.30 ERA.
There are a few quality trends that back this investment. New York has won four of its last five after allowing five runs or mor last, 22 of its last 29 when priced as a favorite, and eight of its last 11 when competing on Thursday. On the other side of the field, Atlanta has slipped in seven of its last 10 against division foes and six straight when facing a foe that allowed five runs or more last.
The Mets lead in the NL East is down to just 2.0-games over the Nats and they need this victory with their ace on the mound badly. Take New York with deGrom. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
