Off that 6-4 home loss to the Angels on Sunday and with a day of rest, the Devil Rays will travel to Nats Country and swipe a big win. Washington enters this contest off yesterday’s 8-4 home victory over New York (Mets) and the Nationals will have issues in this spot.
Left-hander Rich Hill will get the start for the visitors. In four June outings against the Red Sox, Mariners, Orioles and Rangers, No. 14 was nipped for nine earned runs and 15 hits in 19.2 innings. Hill fanned 18 and walked 10 en route to a 2-0 record and a nifty 3.66 ERA. Pitching on the road hasn’t been a problem for Rich either. On foreign soil, Hill has been touched for only 13 earned runs and 24 hits in 33.0 frames. That’s good enough for a 3-0 mark and a strong 3.55 ERA.
Righty Joe Ross will counter for the Nats. So far this season, No. 41 has started 14 games for Washington and been popped for 34 earned runs and 64 hits in 74.1 innings. Ross issued 26 free passes and struck out 73 batters on his way to a 4-7 tally with a 4.12 ERA. Pitching at night has been a problem for Big Joe too. Under the lights, Ross has been rammed for 24 earned runs and 31 hits in 29.2 frames. That’s bad enough for a 1-4 tally with an elevated 7.28 ERA.
There are plenty of powerful trends that line up on this investment too. Tampa Bay has won six of its last seven against National League foes, 26 of its last 35 when facing NL East opponents, nine of its last 13 in the first game of a series, and 38 of its last 56 when facing a foe that scored five runs or more last.
The Devil Rays are a game (1.0) back of the BoSox in the AL East and they need this victory badly in order to keep pace in the division race. Take Tampa Bay with Hill. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
