TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, JUNE 26TH
#977 NY YANKEES with Montgomery (+108) over Boston with Eovaldi at 7:15 PM EST
Arriving hungry off yesterday’s road loss to the BoSox, the Bronx Bombers will get back on the winning track with a solid effort on Saturday evening. The Red Sox have quietly won five straight in this rivalry and the Yankees are anxious to put an end to that streak.
Southpaw Jordan Montgomery will grab the pearl for the Pinstripes. With 14 starts logged in the books this season, No. 47 has surrendered only 34 earned runs and 68 hits in 76.0 innings. Montgomery has whiffed 75 and walked 21 en route to a 3-1 record with a strong 4.03 ERA. Pitching under the lamps have been a good thing for Jordan too. At night, Montgomery has been scratched for only 18 earned runs and 45 hits in 51.2 frames. That’s good enough for a 3-0 tally with an elite 3.14 ERA.
Veteran righty Nathan Eovaldi will counter for the home team. In his last three starts against the Royals, Blue Jays, and Astros, No. 17 was drilled for eight earned runs and 21 hits in 16.1 innings of work. Eovaldi issued five free passes and served up one home run on his way to an 0-2 mark and a 4.41 ERA. Back on June 4th in the Big Apple, Nathan faced NY and was tripped for only one earned run and eight hits in 6.0 innings. Eovaldi fanned seven and issued no walks and picked up the dub in the Red Sox’s 5-2 victory.
As you can see, both arms are certainly capable. Thankfully, a handful of quality team trends will prove to be the difference in this war. New York has won six straight after allowing five runs or more, 63 of its last 92 when playing on Saturday, and 50 of its last 74 when competing in the second game of a series. On the other side of Fenway Park, Boston has fallen in 21 of its last 31 at home against a left-handed arm and 45 of its last 65 in its own backyard facing a foe that holds a team won/loss percentage greater than .500.
The Yankees are looking up at the Red Sox and Devil Rays in AL East standings and they need a win here just to keep pace in the division. Take New York with Montgomery. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
