TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, JUNE 8TH
#967 NY YANKEES with Montgomery (-115) over Minnesota with Pineda at 8:10 PM EST
On a dismal 2-8 SU run and off four consecutive straight up losses and a day of rest, the Bronx Bombers will travel to the Twin Cities and pick up a much-needed victory. Minnesota enters this contest off a pair of road wins at Kansas City and this will be a tough encore for manager Rocco Baldelli and his boys.
Young left-hander Jordan Montgomery will take the hill for the Pinstripes. With 11 starts in the books for the Yankees this season, No. 47 has been touched for only 26 earned runs and 51 hits in 59.2 innings of work. Montgomery whiffed 59 and walked 15 batters on his way to a 3-1 tally and a reliable 3.92 ERA. Under the lights, Jordan has been outstanding too. At night, Montgomery has been tapped for just 11 earned runs and 32 hits in 40.2 frames. Jordan holds a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 43-8 and sports a 3-0 record with a magnificent 2.43 ERA.
Former NYY righty Michael Pineda will hit the hump for the Twinkies. In his last three starts versus the O’s (twice) and Pale Hose, No. 35 was blasted for nine earned runs and 14 hits in 14.1 innings. Pineda has served up three dongs and walked five en route to a 1-2 tally with a stiff 5.65 ERA. Pitching at night has been an issue for Michael too. Under the lights, Pineda has been pummeled for six earned runs and 10 hits in only 8.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 1-1 tally and a weak 6.75 ERA.
Plenty of solid team trends line up on this wager too. New York has tasted victory in 36 of its last 52 as a guest in this series, 20 of its last 27 against AL Central foes, and 41 of its last 61 when playing on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Minnesota has dropped 16 of its last 23 when facing a foe that allowed five runs or more last, 12 of its last 17 as an underdog, and 13 of its last 18 when facing a left-handed starter.
Off that embarrassing performance at home against the BoSox, the Yankeed will rally the troops and find success on the road. Take New York with Montgomery. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
