TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, JUNE 6TH
#964 SAN DIEGO with Paddack (-145) over NY Mets with Stroman at 4:10 PM EST
Off Saturday’s 4-0 shutout home loss to the Mets, the Padres will get back on track with a solid performance this afternoon. New York has quietly dropped three of its last five and it will have a hard time keeping the Friars offense under wraps after blanking them yesterday.
Up on the mound for the home team will be young right-hander Chris Paddack. In his last performance in the Windy City against the Cubs, No. 59 was crunched for five earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. Paddack served up three long balls and was tagged with the loss in the Padres 7-2 defeat. Thankfully, Chris has pitched very well in his own backyard this season surrendering only five earned runs and 15 hits in 19.0 frames. Paddack holds a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 18-7 and carries a 1-2 mark with a respectable 2.37 ERA.
Veteran righty Marcus Stroman will counter for the visiting team. In his last outing on the road against the Diamondbacks, No. 0 was tapped for three earned runs and seven hits in 6.0 innings. Stroman fanned six and issued no walks but failed to earn a decision in Arizona’s 6-5 win. Day starts have been mediocre for Marcus too. With the lights turned off, Stroman has surrendered 12 earned runs and 28 hits in 29.1 innings. After working with the numbers, that adds up to a 2-3 tally and a 3.68 ERA.
Plenty of quality angles and trends back this investment. San Diego has won 15 of its last 18 in its own backyard, 13 of its last 16 when playing on Sunday, 41 of its last 55 when priced as home chalk, and 10 of its last 14 when coming off a loss. On the flip side, New York has dropped 44 of its last 63 when priced as a road pup and five of its last seven as a guest.
Resting in second place in the NL West a full 2.0-games back of the division-leading Giants, the Padres need this victory badly in order to inch their way closer to the top spot. Take San Diego with Paddack. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
