TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, MAY 25TH
#959 SAN DIEGO with Musgrove (+116) over Milwaukee with Burnes at 7:40 PM EST
Off yesterday’s 5-3 road loss to the Brew Crew and currently on a 9-1 diamond run, the Padres will get back on the winning track with a solid performance in this rematch. Milwaukee has quietly won three straight. That fact is noted. However, manager Craig Counsell’s kids have dropped six of their last 10 and they’ll have issues in this setting.
Right-hander Joe Musgrove will toe the rubber for the Friars. With nine starts in the bank this season, No. 44 has been nipped for only 14 earned runs and 33 hits in 51.0 frames. Musgrove has assembled a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 70-11 on his way to a 4-4 tally with a solid 2.47 ERA. Big Joe has been lights out with the moon shining too. At night, Musgrove has been scratched for only four earned runs and 16 hits in 31.0 innings. After the math, that adds up to a powerful 3-2 record with a sensational 1.16 ERA.
Power righty Corbin Burnes will counter for the home team. In his last three performances against the Royals, Cardinals, and Marlins, No. 39 was tapped for seven earned runs and 15 hits in 16.0 innings of work. Burnes fanned 27 and walked two on his way to an 0-2 record and a 3.94 ERA. At home, Corbin hasn’t been able to find many wins either. With 22.1 frames completed in his own backyard, Burnes has been nicked for six earned runs and 16 hits. That equates to a 1-3 record with a 2.42 ERA.
There are a handful of team trends that help our cause. San Diego has won four straight in the second game of a series, seven of its last eight when coming off a loss, 20 of its last 28 overall and 17 of its last 24 on the road battling a right-handed starter. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has slipped in five of its last seven as a favorite and six of its last seven when facing a foe that allowed five runs or more last.
The Padres own a half-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West, and they’ll need this victory in order to keep their advantage. Take San Diego with Musgrove. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
