TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
#614 TOLEDO (-8) over Cleveland State at 7 PM EST
Off a respectable showing in the Xavier Invitational (one win and two losses to Bradley and Xavier by a combined five points), Toledo will open its home season with a dominant performance over visiting Cleveland State on Tuesday night. The Vikings will be competing in their first game and they’ll have trouble getting up to speed in this non-conference battle.
A quick glance at the History Book shows that the Rockets have played very well in this series notching a solid 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS mark in the last six meetings. Equally impressive, in home openers, UT has inked a powerful 24-3 SU tally in its last 27 games. Also, favorites priced at -12.5 or less that are running in their fourth game of the season own a strong 9-2 SU and 8-2-1 ATS record provided their opponent is competing in their first game of the year. Finally, game four home favorites that take the floor with four or more days of rest own a reliable 13-6 ATS mark provided they opened with three consecutive pointspread wins.
Technically speaking, this is a poor wagering spot for CSU. As a road underdog lined up against an opponent that arrives off exactly one straight up loss, the Vikings hold a shocking 7-46 SU and 18-35 ATS record in their last 53 games. In this setting grabbing +13 or less, Cleveland State falls to a horrible 6-37 SU and 11-32 ATS including a nasty 1-21 SU and 4-18 ATS if the Vikes are fighting with revenge of any kind. In addition, when lined up against MAC opposition, CSU sports a feeble 5-24 SU and 10-19 ATS in its last 29 tries including a dismal 4-19 SU and 6-17 ATS in this set if its opponent carries a team won/loss percentage of .750 or less.
The Vikings return five starters from a team that went 11-21 SU last year under first-year skipper Dennis Gates. Even though State will be better this season, it’s going to take some time for them to get up to speed. The Rockets are already there. Take Toledo. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
