TOM STRYKER’S FREE FOOTBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10TH
#337 SOUTH CAROLINA (-13) over Vanderbilt at 12 PM EST
Since grabbing a win and cover at home against the ‘Dores last season, the Gamecocks have posted an 0-5 SU and 1-3-1 ATS record in their last five battles. Off the season-opening blemishes to Tennessee and Florida, South Carolina will have no trouble picking up its first win in 2020 when it faces Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Historically speaking, Carolina has dominated Vandy posting a solid 24-4 SU and 17-9-2 ATS in the last 28 meetings. A rare technical situation backs the ‘Cocks too. Since 1986, game three double-digit road favorites hold a solid 8-0 SU and 6-2 ATS record provided they opened the season with back-to-back straight up losses. Also, since 1980, SEC road favorites priced at -10.5 or more hold a money-making 24-12-1 ATS record provided they played on the road in their last game. That bodes well for head coach Will Muschamp and his kids. Finally, on the road tackling an opponent that scoots in off a blowout loss of 10 points or more, South Carolina holds a rewarding 21-8-2 ATS mark including 19-6-2 ATS if this is a conference game.
Offensively, this Vanderbilt team is really challenged right now. The Commodores had several offensive linemen opt-out because of COVID-19 concerns, and they are being led by a true freshman quarterback in Ken Seals. Scoring has become a problem for Vandy too. Since upsetting Missouri last year as a 21.5-point underdog, the ‘Dores have struggled to put points on the board in conference play posting a grand total of 50 points combined in their last six SEC games. That’s an average of 8.3 points per game! To make matters worse, when lined up against an opponent that arrives off two or more straight up losses, Vanderbilt has inked a woeful 16-29-1 ATS mark in its last 46 lined games including a miserable 7-17-1 ATS if the ‘Dores are playing in the comforts of home.
Coach Muschamp is on the hot seat in Columbia right now and he needs a blowout victory to calm things down. Vanderbilt and its low-octane offense can make that happen. Take South Carolina. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
