TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD
#903 PHILADELPHIA with Eflin (-145) over Washington with Fedde at 6:05 PM EST
Off four consecutive losses including a double-dip blemish to the Nats in yesterday’s twinbill, the Phillies will dig deep and grab a much-needed victory on Wednesday night. Philadelphia is on the outside looking in at the 2020 playoffs and they can’t afford another defeat here.
Right-hander Zach Eflin will take the mound for the road team. In his last start at Toronto on September 18th, No. 56 tossed a gem allowing no earned runs and four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Eflin fanned nine, walked two and grabbed the 7-0 win. The history is worth noting too. So far, Zach has battled the Nationals eight times in his career and assembled a 3-3 tally with a 4.43 ERA.
Right-hander Erick Fedde will hit the hump for the home team. It’s safe to say that No. 23 won’t be happy to see Philly. In a pair of outings against the Fightin’ Phils in August, Fedde was crushed for 10 earned runs and 11 hits in 11.0 frames. Erick whiffed five, walked two and served up a pair of homeruns on his way to an 0-2 mark and an elevated 8.18 ERA. Pitching in his own backyard hasn’t helped Fedde either. At home, Erick has been slapped for eight earned runs and 20 hits in 17.0 innings. That equates to an 0-2 mark and a 4.24 ERA.
There are a few quality trends that support this Best Bet as well. Philadelphia has won five of its last six in the fourth game of a series and 13 of its last 17 after scoring five runs or more in its last game. Meanwhile, Washington has fallen in 18 of its last 26 at home, 16 of its last 22 in its own backyard facing a right-handed starter and four straight in the fourth game of a series.
With only four games left, the Phillies are feeling sense of urgency and are almost out of time. Rest assured, after dropping Tuesday’s DH, manager Joe Girardi’s boys will grab this win. Take Philadelphia with Eflin. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
